Australia Great Ocean Road – Part 2 –
We left Adelaide on a blue summer’s day – there’s nothing like setting off on a road trip. A buzz of anticipation in your belly, neat clean clothes in your bag, a car devoid of rubbish, sand and discarded brochures. Driving through the dry parched rolling hills south of the city, heading for a peninsula with an unpronounceable name, the Fleurieu. Hope I don’t have to try and say that to any of the locals!
McLaren Vale at 10am, a wee bit too early for a tipple, even on holiday. Vines stretch away in the distance, tantalising you with thoughts of the end product! Forty five cellar doors within spitting distance, or rather pedal power. Bring a bike and sip your way around – the only way to go, but for now that thought’s consigned to another trip.
Another hour and we round a bend to see the bluest ocean stretch away from straw-yellow beaches – the Southern Ocean – and it’s hard to think that the next stop is Antarctica. There’s pretty seaside holiday towns scattered down the Peninsula, like Victor Harbor with its horse-drawn tram, but I’m not looking for the quaint. I’ve ventured this far south to explore one of Australia’s remaining undiscovered environmental gems – the Coorong.
